The magical and medicinal Minnesotan minstrel with his Texas masterpiece album, Charlie is now rightly so a bonafide honorary Texan and regularly tours there as a Kerrville Festival Favourite and is also in easier times a regular visitor to Europe.

I did not know Tim and had never heard of him..but I was playing a tip jar gig in Spicewood TX at a Mexican restaurant with Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus two of Tim's friends. that is near their house so Tim shows up with his old guitar he got in the navy. It was a nylon stringed job that did not sound great. Jim and Sherry told me how well regarded he was among other Texas songwriters. And I admit to not being all that impressed. I got back up there and was playing my song 'Star Motel' and I saw him wince. I thought it might be because of the song because of course as songwriters it is all about us and our songs. How fragile we are. On the break we stat together and Tim went to his car and came back with 5 of his CD titles to give me. It was obvious he wanted me to record one of his tunes. I saw him wince a few more times. Jim Patton told me later that Tim had stage 4 lung cancer. That explains the weak performance. I immersed myself in Tim's music all the way home to Minnesota.and for about a month after in my car. It was clear to me then why he was so highly regarded. There were several songs I wanted to record but I choose this beautiful waltz. Tim on his death bed sent me the lyrics and the chord changes...I went down there that next year to play that same place after I had sent Marian my version of the song, Marian showed up with on of Tim's old band members whom I met later in Nashville his name escapes me now. anyway Marian went out and shook down the punters with our jug and got us over $200.00 that is great money for Austin the tip jar capital of the world.
