My friend Rick Pedersen of Spicer Minnesota wrote ‘Arms of a Gypsy Woman’. Rick always was front and center almost every time I played at O’Neil’s Pub in Spicer. One night Rick got up on my break and sang that song. I told him at that time I thought it was real good. I found out that Rick was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I thought it would be a nice gesture to learn it and sing it for him. At my request our mutual friend Doug sent me the lyrics. I realized that I could make the song better if I worked on the storyline so I set about changing it. I felt kind of bad about this because most people would take offense to someone else changing their song. I went to see Rick on his deathbed and told him what I had done his and eyes got wide, I defiantly had his rapt attention. Thru the haze of the pain meds he listened and agreed that it was better. We shook hands on a co-write and I left him with a big smile and went off on a tour to Texas. I think Rick died thinking that at least one song of his would live on. He was a very gentle person a real lover of music and I think of that wide grin every time I sing that song.
